Sheriff Jason Smith
Jason Smith was elected as the Sheriff of Washington Parish in 2023 after campaigning to make Washington Parish safer. Before being elected, Sheriff Smith retired in 2016 from the United States Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel and returned to his family farm in Mt. Hermon.
Sheriff Smith joined the Marine Corps in January of 1995 after graduating from Louisiana State University. As an infantry officer he commanded Marines at every rank during his service, including two combat deployments to Iraq as a company commander. He was in charge of Marine Corps recruiting for the state of New Jersey from 2007-2010 and served in units from North Carolina, California, Virginia, Louisiana and the country of Bahrain. His last posting was as the senior USMC exchange officer with the Royal Marines of the United Kingdom. His personal decorations include the Silver Star medal, Bronze Star medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. He is a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College, was selected as the Basic School’s instructor of the year for 2000-2001, and was awarded the Marine Corps University Rose Award for teaching excellence.
Sheriff Smith served as the first President of the Franklinton Soccer Club and remains involved in coaching. He has volunteered as a member of the Washington Parish Fair Parade Committee and is a board member of the Washington Parish Farm Bureau. He is a member of the American Legion, Post 24 and regularly attends the Mt. Hermon Methodist Church. Sheriff Smith graduated with Class #68 from the Slidell Regional Police Academy in May 2024 and serves on the Louisiana Brand Commission. He lives in Mount Hermon with his wife Rebekah and five children.
