During a DUI checkpoint operation conducted on the evening of February 6, 2024, Washington Parish Sheriff’s Deputies made a significant arrest at the intersection of Highway 437 and Highway 16 in Franklinton, Louisiana. The operation, aimed at enhancing road safety and stopping impaired driving, resulted in the arrest of a suspect for drug possession among other charges.

At approximately 7:43 PM, Lieutenant David Cupp observed a white 2004 Chevy Tahoe with a non-operational headlight. The vehicle, driven by Byron Morgan, a31-year-old male from Franklinton, was approached by Deputy Dillon Kent for the observed violation. Upon interaction, it was discovered that Morgan was driving without a valid license.

Deputy Kent, along with Deputy Matthew Manning, escalated the stop due to additional concerns, leading to a vehicle search with consent from Morgan and his passenger. The search uncovered a baggie containing a brown powdery substance, suspected to be illegal drugs, inside a book bag on the passenger seat. Morgan later admitted to the substance being ecstasy, claiming ownership.

Byron Morgan was arrested and charged with possession of Schedule II, driving under suspension, improper equipment, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Subsequent to his arrest, additional evidence, including cash and a red straw with powder residue, was discovered on Morgan’s person during processing at the Washington Parish Jail. All evidence will be submitted to the laboratory for thorough analysis.
